想对葛辉的画写上些什么,已是一年开外了,但迟迟未能完成,除因自身生性疏懒之外,也就是葛辉作品变数大的缘故。每次我去他的画室,均会被他的工作成就所触动。凝视他的画,我仿佛能感觉到他内心情感的激流。他内心世界所激发出来的作品,那些变化,正也真实地述说他的心路的历程,那是一条上升的线形,也同样是他精神升华的写照。
其实绘画讲究一种因缘,葛辉的绘画作品更多的是他潜意识的自然流露,是他当下的意识在笔端的流露。工作过程中的当下意识。作为艺术家,努力“解决这样或那样的绘画专业问题”,无疑是责无旁贷的。但是,如果把自己局限于玩弄技巧,而忘记“艺术并不就是目的”(巴尔蒂斯语),则难免误入“为艺术而艺术”的歧途,落到空洞无物的地步。葛辉作画,是要在自由自在的氛围中追求一种能表现发自内心的某个想象状态的绘画意境,为了构成意境气息,葛辉考虑更多的是画面,于是他对材料也就不加限制地选择。
葛辉是个心胸开阔,感情丰富而充满幽默感的人,但他最大的优势还在于他的好学。葛辉予物理、数学均有天赋,且有极大的兴趣,广泛的接触使他大开眼界。他的学习陶染,加上禀性气质,使他形成独到的审美品味。一旦付诸实践,自是出手不俗。更重要的是他有意要达,有情要抒。葛辉的自我,有许多是来自自己过去沉厚的理科知识,这些理科知识给予他的并非是束缚而是对未知神秘世界的敬仰与疑惑,他叛离他的生活(画家一世中仿佛注定的就是叛离)叛离他的理科大学,叛离他的家庭束缚,其意就是在探求物理、数学中那份神秘,感应那份神秘。葛辉的意识里,正如维拉或虚无主义者们所说,“生活是如此重要的一件事,以至不能严肃地谈论它。”那探求与感应,在葛辉的笔下,也即显得似乎是轻描淡写的了,这轻描淡写在葛辉是他的叙事方式,透过这些图式,来凝视自己内心的世界,显现的却也是更为情真意切了。
绘画如果过于追求画面氛围,就会淡化对形体的塑造,可是充分塑造后又会丢掉许多东西,比如,那些发自内心的情感,或者是画面的原生态。画一幅画都是一个新的开始,一个新的思路历程,这种思路历程的表现应当体现而不是重复(技能的重复),而是有一个与之相适应的形式来表现。
好的作品,制作感往往并不强,而是轻松的,心情的自然流露,仿佛是不经意在自己指间涌现出来,在开始时,它也许并不能引起观者的注意,一旦回头来看,他将愈加令人喜欢。葛辉也经常与我谈到这些,他总希望能在自己的画面上加强些塑造感,可是一旦去塑造,那份原生态也将随之消失啊。他也讨厌那些实实在在但缺少灵魂的形体。他处理题材也是“大而化之”的态度,表现的内容“意到而止”,于是他在作画时也便不去精雕细刻,不把精力放在细枝末节上,而是从大形求本质,非特“要言不繁”,而且“意到即止”,使观众的注意力集中一处,而给他们的想象力留下余地。要“抱朴守拙”,画“熟”了,“熟”就易于“油”,“油”就易于“空”。画要愈画愈生,做人也是如此,人要愈老愈憨,愈老愈朴实。圆滑精明那不是成熟,成熟是更能体谅、理解人,更懂得宽容。
这也正如王国维老先生在“可爱不可信,可信不可爱”两难的抉择中一样,但艺术中,倒宁愿选择可爱,而淡化可信。无意识地淡化塑造也恰恰在画面体现葛辉对塑造的探索,探索是过程,这过程也同时给予了画面一个无限的空间。
古人曰:“难得糊涂”, 就有人提倡糊涂学,糊涂也是一种福气,糊涂得可爱了,人也就更易接近了。可信到了一定程度,也易于让人敬而远之哦,而且可信也易于形成模式,让观者在视觉上造成疲劳。葛辉的变数大,于他是好事,也正是他的长处。所以,我很希望葛辉君少来些模式,多来些探索,并将这种探索的状态再显现出来。
人的生活状态是一种细腻的情感,也是一种本能的情感,这种发生本能的情感,要靠自身的好好呵护,细心呵护,万不可被外在所打破而退化,一旦退化了,再怎么重拾,也只能是徒劳!有位前辈言“艺术要脱俗,生活要入俗”,倒也说的好!可是如何把握,则有难度啊,一旦把捻不住,艺术的本能就会被生活同化掉。艺术是个人性情的自我表现,这决不是教育出来的,艺术是来自感悟,而不是教育,重要的是对自己真性情的呵护!
我曾在南艺研修班结业论文中写道,艺术家的生活状态应当高于他的作品, 他的生活应当是作品的一部分。怎么样的生活状态对于艺术者来说是很重要的,因为要表现的往往是生活,生活也就决定了你内心当下的真实状态,也即是你自身的心态与情感,否则,那就是虚假或者是一些罗列的符号图式。
近日一直在读贾平凹的字画,他的字画完全是他才华过剩,写文字已不足以表露自我,而溢出来的,其显现的恢弘之气是多数人难以期盼的!这才是好画啊!
我想在做梦的同时,葛辉也得看一些书,比如有关老庄、禅学,万不可以为看了几千年前的东西就不前卫、不现代了。老庄、禅学在开始并非是避世的,而是以一种积极的态度入世。在当时那种混战时期,其中的思想是多么积极而富有救世意识。至于后来,什么抽签、算命那一套,是后世人性堕落的缘故,有人借助“道”的名号,来欺世盗利而已,这非“道”之本义,亦非“道”之正道。
西方的艺术家有好多都特好东方的玄学,他们美学所追求的也极与我们的老庄、禅学的思想生活契合,这在徐复观的《中国艺术精神》中有着详细的述说,倒可以借来看看(书非借不能读也)。
这段文字也就当作我为葛辉君助威,抑或是声援的声音吧。希望他能健步行走在自己的大道上!
Words of Encouragement

One year ago I wanted to write for the works of Ge Hui. But the wish was delayed to be accomplished until now because of my laziness and mostly the variableness of his arts. Every time I go to his atelier I will be touched by his accomplishments without exception. Poring over his works I could feel the riptide of his inner emotion. The works inspired from his inner world bears the transformation which could just tell us the thoughts and feelings in the course of his life faithfully. It seems like an ascending string and is a portrayal of his spirit sublimation as well.
As a matter of fact painting is a kind of karma. From Ge Hui’s paintings we could see the natural expression of his unconscious and his awareness of the moment. As an artist, it is an undoubtedly responsibility to resolve this or that professional issues in painting. Whereas if he Confines himself to playing skills, while forgetting that “art does not end in” (Balthus language), he would be inevitably strayed into the wrong path “art for art” and fell to the point of inane. Ge Hui’s painting is in the pursuit of a state of painting which could perform some imagined mood from the heart in a free atmosphere. In order to compose artistic atmosphere, Ge Hui considers more about the picture, so he is unrestricted on the choice of material.
Ge Hui is a man who is open-minded, emotionally rich and full of humor sense. But his greatest strength lies in his curiousness. He has a genius for the physics and mathematics and has a great interest in both. Extensive contacts make him an eye-opener. His learning coupled with natural disposition and temperaments make him develop a unique aesthetic taste. Once put into practice, he has impressive performance naturally. More important is that he has affection to express. Ge Hui’s self are mostly from his past profound knowledge of science which brings him admiration and doubts to a mysterious world but not bondages. He betrayed his life (it seems that an artist was destined to defection) and his science university and his family constraints as well. His intention is to explore and fell the mystery in physics and mathematics. Ge Hui’s consciousness, just as Vera or nihilist said, “Life is such an important thing that we are failing to talk about it seriously.” The exploration and felling under his brush seem to be understated. Understatement is his way of narrative. He gazes into his own inner world through these drawing which appears more sincere.
If a painter is in the excessive pursuit of the atmosphere in his drawing, he will weaken the shaping of form and structure. But he will loose something such as heartfelt feelings or the original ecology of his drawing if he fully shapes the form and structure. Painting a picture is a new start and a new course of thinking as well which should reflect rather than repetition (repetition of skills). There should be a corresponding form of representation.
Good works always contain little sense of facture, but comfortable sense and spontaneous mood. It seems as if come forth in his fingers inadvertently. In the beginning, it may not draw the viewer's attention. Once turning around, it will be even more simpatico. Ge Hui often discusses it with me. He always hopes to strengthen the sense of shaping. But the original ecology will disappear. He also dislikes those concrete forms which lacks spirit. He treats with subject matters with an attitude of “bold aesthetic” and perform content “with its meaning to the full length". So he would not work at the painting with special care and put much force on minor details, but searching the essence from the general profile. He insists on two rules which are “simple and refining” and “with its meaning to the full length". So he makes the viewer’s attention focus on one point and leave them room of imagination. A painter should embrace the character of plain and honest, firstly he draws “proficiently” which is easily to be “skillfully”, then “pure”. Painting should be more unsophisticated. In the same way, a man should be more na?ve and simple when he grows older. Sleekness and smart do not show one’s maturity. Maturity refers to one who is more considerate, understanding, and full of tolerance.
This is also just the same condition as Wang Guowei, who is in the dilemma of “cute things are not trusted, credible things are not cute”. He would rather choose cuteness and weaken credibility. Unconsciously weakening the sense of shaping precisely shows Ge Hui’s exploration for molding. Exploration is a process; this process also gives the drawing an infinite space.

As the ancients proverb goes, “Where ignorance is bliss, it's folly to be wise.” Some people advocate Ignorance Science, ignorance is also a blessing, when one’s ignorance turned into cuteness, and he would be more accessibility. When one was believable to a certain extent, he would be treated at a respectful distance. Believability is easily to form a kind of pattern and bring viewer visual weariness. Variability is benefit for Ge Hui. It also shows his strong point. So I hope he could pay less attention on the mode than on the exploration and show the state of exploration in his works.
The living state of human being is a kind of delicate feeling, also an instinctive feeling, which need be cared well and could not be broken and degenerated by the outside, otherwise it is futile however behold if it has been degenerated. There was an elder had said that arts must be out of the custom, while lives need go into the custom, which is very good to say that. How to grasp is very hard. If it can not be grasped, the ability of arts will be assimilated by lives. Art is a personal disposition of self-expression, which is by no means out of education. Art is from the sentiment, rather than education. So it is important to keep the care of our own true nature.
I had written down that the life state of artists should be higher than their works and their life should be one part of their works in my seminar graduation thesis when I was in Nanjing Arts Institute. The state of the life is important to artists because to express is just the lives, which also can determine the true state of your inside, and is your attitude and feeling. Otherwise, it is false or just some schematic symbols listed.
Now days, I always read some words and pictures of Jia Pingwa, which are overflowed for he are full of literary talent and writing could not show himself, as appears great talent that is hoped to owe by many people. They are truly good pictures.
When I have been in a dream, Ge Hui is reading some books, just like ones about Laozi and Zhuangzi, Zen Buddhism. Don’t think that reading what thousands of years ago is not avant-garde, non-modern; instead, they were not escaping from the society at first, but keeping a positive attitude towards accession to the society. At that time of tangled warfare, some of their thoughts are very positive and filling with the thoughts of saving the society. To the later, ballot, fortune-telling stuff are all the reason of depravation of human nature of later degenerations. Some were cheating others and stealing by the way of Dao, which is not the original meaning of that, is also the right way.
Many western artists like eastern metaphysics. Their hunting in esthetics is similar with the lives and thoughts of Laozi and Zhuangzi, Zen Buddhism. That had been described in detail in the book of The Spirit of Chinese Art by Xu Fuguan. We could borrow for there is an old saying that is books borrowed could be read well.
Those words are just as cheers or sound of help for Mr. Ge. I hope he could have a good luck in future.
